Rest In Peace Lemon

Bobby Murcer dead at the age of 62. A sad, sad moment for the Yankees, Major League Baseball and all of his fans. Unfortunately, great human-beings aren't immune to cancer.

Lemon inspired countless individuals, myself being one of them. All you need to know about Bobby Murcer is the events of August 6, 1979. In the morning Murcer buried his best friend Thurman Munson and gave the eulogy during his funeral.

That night Murcer knocked in all five runs, including a 3-run homer and a walk-off two run single, generating an eruption from the jubilant Yankee Stadium crowd as well as relief within an emotionally charged home dugout.

Prayers go out to his family and friends during an obviously tough, tough time.

Serby Q&A With Lemon

Bobby Murcer is the subject of Steve Serby's Sunday Q&A in today's New York Post. Here are a few tidbits:

Q: First time you saw Yankee Stadium?

A: I just was mind-boggled by how big it was when I walked out on the field. I thought to myself, "Oh my goodness, how am I ever gonna catch a fly ball in this place?"

Q: You didn't appreciate Gaylord Perry's spitball, so you sent him a gallon of lard.

A: I think I got the clubhouse kid to get it. I just asked him to get me some pure, old grease.

Q: Toughest pitcher?

A: Mickey Lolich.

Q: Funniest teammate?

A: Sparky Lyle.

Murcer called Thurman Munson "one of the [greatest] clutch hitters of all time." Delivering Munson's eulogy was something Murcer said he "wanted to" and "had to" do.

Murcer's Biopsy Comes Back Clean. Great news as Monday's biopsy on former Yankees outfielder Bobby Murcer revealed the problem-area which doctors were concerned might show a recurrence of brain cancer turned out to be merely scar tissue. Murcer is one of the game's great human-beings on and off of the field.

Murcer To Face New Brain Cancer Trial. According to an e-mail sent out by his wife, Bobby Murcer may have to defeat brain cancer for a second time. Murcer must undergo a brain biopsy on Monday to determine if an area of concern for doctors - which appeared during a recent MRI - is another tumor or simply scar tissue. Speaking for myself, every true Yankees fan and all of Major League Baseball, let's hope it's the latter. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Murcer family.
