The Scarlet Knights Recruiting Monster

He is considered one of the top-5 high school offensive lineman in the country. He is 6'6 and listed at 340lbs. Other than the university he will be attending in 2007, the other schools rounding out his top-5 were as follows: USC, Notre Dame, Miami, and Ohio State. His name? Anthony Davis. The school he chose? Rutgers University baby!?!

If you don't already know, I am a Rutgers alum who only recently experienced a small taste of big-time college football. Davis will anchor an already impressive offensive line, earning free meals from Ray Rice on a daily basis. He boasted that he tallied 60 pancake blocks during last season alone - you can find video of him manhandling hopeless defensive ends here.

By far the most impressive recruiting class ever assembled at Rutgers, the 2007 recruits also include Manny Abreu - ranked #2 weakside linebacker in the country - who chose the Knights over the defending champion Florida Gators. Another signing, Jonathon Freeny (Dwight Freeney's cousin despite a different spelling), has head coach Greg Schiano referring to the DE as "a natural."

According to rivals.com, Rutgers was able to secure nine of the top-30 New Jersey prospects. Consequently, Scout.com had Rutgers ranked as the 28th best recruiting class in the nation - they would have been in the top-25 had safety Joseph Nichols not de-committed & chosen Miami.

All in all, it was a good day to be a Rutgers fan. Who in God's name would have ever expected to hear those words spoken without laughter following. With the successful signing of Davis, my only remaining request is that Schiano & Co. rearrange their creampuff schedule for the 2007 season. Eight home games with out-of-conference opponents like Buffalo, Navy, and Norfolk St. will not foster nationwide respect.
